Also known as the William H. Lehman Causeway, State Road 856 is a 1.3-mile-long causeway connecting Biscayne Boulevard (U.S. Route 1/SR 5) in Aventura and Collins Avenue (SR A1A) in Sunny Isles Beach, Florida. Named after William H. Lehman, a member of the United States House of Representatives who was instrumental in obtaining Federal construction funds for the high-rise bridge, the Lehman Causeway is the most recent addition to Miami-Dade County’s set of causeways crossing Biscayne Bay and the Intracoastal Waterway. The William H. Lehman Causeway was dedicated and opened to vehicular traffic on Sunday, October 30, 1983.

Opened and signed in 1993, State Road 856 is also a limited access highway with one exit featuring Texas U-turns near its midpoint. The exit (onto West Country Club Drive) provides access to and from Aventura Mall, one of Florida’s largest enclosed shopping centers. Next to the Intracoastal Waterway, high-rise condominiums are on the land near SR 856 in both Aventura and Sunny Isles Beach.
